  • Into Enterprise - two weeks, one mission: Build your business skills - 11 – 24 November 2019

     

    RBKC’s Into Enterprise provides two weeks of enterprise, information, events and tasters specifically for borough residents.

     

    Week 1: starts 11 November
     

    Week one starts November 11 with the unique PopUp Business School and will be hosted by the uber stylish Museum of Brands in the north of the borough. Running 10am until 3pm every weekday, with limited free spaces, this unique and innovative one-week course aims to grow local businesses and teach entrepreneurs how to make money for free, using the resources already available to them.
     

    The School is completely free to attend, but tickets are limited so get in quick. Whether you are already a business owner, have a fledgling start up, or are looking to learn more about how to make your big ideas a reality, the PopUp Business School is the place for you.     Week 2: starts 18 November
     

    Week Two starts November 18 and gives you an opportunity to meet experts in your industry area, talk to specialists in licensing, regulation, law and property, visit affordable business spaces across the borough plus attend insightful talks for all ages – with special events for schools. Hosted by a variety of enterprise-support partners across the borough, there will be something for you here.

    Week two will operate in tandem with Global Entrepreneurship Week, where entrepreneurs across the world will learn from each other and experts in their field. Open the document below and select the event of your choice to book.

     

    RBKC have collaborated with partners Westway Trust, Museum of Brands, Portobello Business Centre, K&C Foundation, Turning Point, Chamber of Commerce, The Workary and local housing associations Peabody and Octavia, plus PopUp Business School to provide these two weeks of enterprise support for you.

    A free workshop on managing people, developing teams and an introduction to HR for your small business.

    Market Entrepreneur Tour

    When: Tuesday 19th 2.00 - 4.00pm

    Where: Meet - Earl of Lonsdale on Westbourne Grove

    What do you need to be a trader/ an entrepreneur? What can you do and what can you not do? The tour helps potential traders consider the issues of running a business on a market or in a pop-up pod. This opportunity has the least barriers to entry as a business and has developed into large scale business and high street names. It will also ask potential traders to consider the other influencers and ways people see markets and consider what the future holds. For those attending it may be the start of their journey to be the next Sir Alan Sugar!

    The tour will meet at the Earl of Lonsdale on Westbourne Grove, walk through Portobello Road and then make its way under the Westway to Portobello (business start-up pods). The tour will be outdoors and will adapt according to the weather.

    Are you 65+ years and do you love business?

    When: Tuesday 19th 2.00 - 4.00pm

    Where: Museum of Brands, 111-117 Lancaster Road

    If you are interested in the most innovative business ideas in British history and looking to spark your inspiration with a social activity the Museum is for you. To celebrate innovation and business throughout generations the Museum of Brands offers a free talk. At the Museum you will also get the chance to explore how brands shape and are shaped by people, culture and society. The exhibits will take you on a journey of 150 years of brands such as Lifebuoy, OXO and Marmite. After the lunchtime talk you can also enjoy our new Memory Trail with your friends and colleagues.

    Want to be a market trader? Want to be a Carnival trader? 

    When: Tuesday 19th 4.00 - 8.00pm

    Where: Street Trading Office Tavistock Road

    Open access drop in sessions are being held to facilitate all queries. A short presentation on how to be a trader and then a question and answer session. This session will provide a brief guide into being a trader here and at markets and events around London. You should leave understanding what you need to trade and a basic plan of how you take your product to the customer. The session will signpost other information for further learning and guidance.

    Wednesday 20th

    Increase your business reach

    When: Wednesday 20th 3.00 - 4.00pm

    Where: Kensington Central Library, 12 Phillimore Walk, Kensington, London W8 7RX

    Kensington and Chelsea Social Council (KCSC), in partnership with Portobello Business Centre (PBC), provide a session for developing new ideas. Drinks, snacks and finger food available. Each session will include:

    Thursday 21st

    Meet the Experts

    When: Thursday 21st 11:00am – 4:30pm

    Where: Westbourne Studios

    Portobello Business Centre hosts an event of 1-to-1 short business advice sessions and talks/workshops with experts in a range of industries to help you get valuable advice and insight. How it works:

    1) Register online on Eventbrite

    2) Pop in on the day, choose and book one or more slots with different experts (one 15-minute slot per expert only). Tip 1: You must prepare your questions in advance in order to receive the maximum benefit from this meeting. Tip 2: in case you have to wait for your slot, you can attend an informal presentation/workshop.

    3) A bell will ring and then your meeting will start. Another bell will ring and your meeting will end, enabling the next person to have their turn.

    If you don't want to have a 15-minute slot with one of our experts you can attend a talk/workshop on top of a storage container!

    The Story of Innovation & Business

    When: Thursday 21st 2.00 – 2.20pm

    Where: Museum of Brands, 111-117 Lancaster Road

    Are you looking to start your own business? Explore the history of business innovation and creative marketing by taking a closer look at the evolution of hundreds of British brands. Join us at the start of your visit for a free 20-minute talk which traces the rise of consumer culture and examines the history of innovation.

     

    After the talk you will be able to explore exhibits from the Victorian era right up to the present day and discover how brands such as Cadburys, Nestle and Heinz have continuously innovated their products to become the business-leaders

    Workshop: Brand Evolution Challenge, Museum of Brands. In this one-hour interactive workshop participants are encouraged to think about how and why brands have evolved over the years to reflect changing consumer needs. After undertaking visual research, participants work in teams to devise how they think the brand should re-position in relation to current market trends. Ideas are pitched to the group and museum team. Workshops cost £180 for up to 25 participants, with a maximum of 30 participants for an additional cost.     Day Course: Enterprise Experience, Museum of Brands. An interactive branding day course. Participants work in teams on a branding brief, performing live market research on Portobello Road in order to develop an existing product to reflect consumer needs and current market trends. The teams present a new brand innovation and a customer profiling board to the museum team for constructive critique. The Enterprise Experience costs £360 for up to 25 participants, with a maximum of 30 participants for an additional cost. Explore the Museum after the workshop at no additional cost.     When: 20th November (10.00am - 12.00 midday and 1-3.00 pm) AND 22 November (10.00am - 12.00 midday and 1-3.00 pm)

     

    What does it take to be a trader/an entrepreneur? What can you do and what can you not do? This tour helps students to appreciate the challenges and rewards of running a business on a market or in a pop-up pod. Market trading has the least barriers to entry into business and, for some, this has been the stepping stone to a big business. Students will consider the influencers, the ways people see markets and consider what the future holds. Could this be the start of the journey to becoming the next Sir Alan Sugar! This is an outside activity. Please be prepared for some walking (the tour will be adapted according to the weather).

    Be your own boss! Construction Youth Trust will provide an immersive session that puts students in the driving seat as they learn what it takes to be the boss.

    Where: Sessions held on school premises. Multiple sessions can be run throughout the school day – including lunch time & after school clubs.

     

    When: Most days week commencing 18th November 2019 (flexible timings, including Lunch time & After School clubs)

     

    Students will work alongside construction industry professionals to apply their GSCE maths to run a simulated small-to-medium enterprise (SME). Students will gain an insight into the practicalities of running a business including the difference between ‘gross profit’ and ‘net profit’. Students will experience what it takes to be self-employed, how business owners keep on top of their finances and out of trouble with the taxman! Students will navigate through a mock business’ financial documents, including receipts, invoices and bank statements, making tax and salary calculations, to work out how much money their business made.

     

    This session is linked to the KS4 maths syllabus and supports Gatsby benchmarks 2, 3, 4 and 5. Student event for group of 30 KS4 students Year 10 and 11.
